They're currently just sending one beam round the track to check for speeds, etc. Initial tests went well. Within an hour the beam had completed three circuits of the LHC. Compared to the old LEP collider which took twelve hours to achieve the same results, that's some achievement!

They're just setting up the tests to send the beam in the other direction which is something they weren't planning on doing today. Apparently, though, they've got a few problems with the cryogenics in one sector that need to be resolved.

The first collisions are scheduled to take place in another four weeks time. If they carry on advancing at their current rate, though, that may just shorten slightly!

There is one of these contracptions, or something similar at least, just about 10 miles from where I live here in Chicago Burbs. I am not sure how far along they are with it. It is Fermilab's Tevatron http://www.fnal.gov/

That would, probably, be the Tevatron at FermiLab.

Yup that be it. I have ridden past it on my bike several times, I guess the glowing green effect will go away after a while LOL
