I want to backup VCR tapes in digital format. What capture device and software are recommended?

The simplest, but least flexible way is to simply get a DVD recorder. No computer required. Once connected, push record on the DVD recorder, play on the VCR and come back when the tape's done.

To capture on your computer, you'll need either a video card that can take a VCR's video and audio as input, or a video tuner card that can tune to the TV channel that the VCR broadcasts on. Another nice alternative is a VCR or camcorder that can output on a firewire connection, and then capture to a firewire card in your PC.

Once it's on the computer, a DVD burner and some burning software, and you're in business. The nice thing about capturing to your computer is that the burning software typically includes some rudimentary editing functionality, and there are several higher powered editing packages available as well.

I've been starting to do some basic machinima, and I found a cheap USB device that's getting the job done:
Diamond VC500 OneTouch

It seems to only be recognized by the software that comes with it, but that's fine. The quality is pretty good (you can choose from a pretty decent range) and it's fast. I like it a lot.

I bought Dazzle DVC170 and had difficulty making it work, so I came here to post asking recommendation. I have decided to settle with a solution by upgrading the software which came with the hardware. I did try Diamond VC500 but for some reason audio could not be recorded. So I went through a series of experiments trying various combinations of hardware + software as follows:

Dazzle DVC170 + Pinnacle Studio 10 -- Did not work.
Diamond MM VC500 + Ulead VideoStudio 10 -- Did not work: No audio could be recorded.
Diamond MM VC500 + Roxio EMC 10 -- Worked but the colour did not look great.
Diamong MM VC500 + Pinnacle Studio 10 -- Did not work.
Dazzle DVC170 + Roxio EMC 10 -- Did not work:
Dazzle DVC170 + Ulead VideoStudio 10 -- Did not work.
Dazzle DVC170 + Pinnacle Studio 12 -- Worked and the colour was better than the above
