Hi All,

Quick question- if I buy a 800MHz DDR2 SODIMM for my laptop (which only supports 667MHz) will the 800MHz be recognised, but used at a lower speed? The reason is that the 667MHz is about $30AUD more expensive and I'm buying a couple of them.

Many Thanks!

You will need to look at the specs for the motherboard that is installed in your laptop for the answer to that question.

It's likely that the faster RAM will work honestly, but this is just a likelihood, not a certainty.

Just remember, installing badly specced RAM can sometimes cause a computer to do *weird* things --- but then also remember that makers of laptops often use cheaper, slower components for purely financial reasons, not technical ones. It's also quite possible that the 800 Mhz will happily run at the faster speed. Just try and find the data for the motherboard wink

It might run at 800 or be knocked down to 667. I don't think it will refuse to run at all it'd be an unlikely case.

I'm pretty sure it'd run but at the lower 667mhz. At the moment I'm running 800mhz ddr2 at 667 in a motherboard that only has 667mhz support without problems. I know that that's for a desktop but the end result should be the same

Thanks all,

I've got a Dell M1530, so the motherboard is anyone's guess! Will probably get 800MHz in the end- No idea why a slower memory speed is more expensive...

Because there's less demand for it, hence less production, hence it's mechanically more expensive to produce and ship it.

Anyway, specs I have found for your computer state that has a Crestline GM/PM 965 chipset supporting up to 4GB of 667MHz DDR2 RAM.

All of the sites I can see appear to show that it only supports 667 Mhz DDR2 --- and please note that to install 4 GB of RAM, you would need to install a 64-bit Windows version.

So I think you would in fact be ill advised to try installing the 800 Mhz RAM, sorry sad
