You should go to the hp website, and download the drivers for your computer.

It may be necessary to unpack some of the drivers installation packages, using a tool such as WinRAR.

Then, copy the folders containing the drivers into a USB flash key, and you should be able to complete your installation.

Let me get this right...

You are trying to do a Clean install of Vista (not dual boot) using a DVD w/ Vista on it?

You get a error because the DVD drive needs a driver so it can read the Vista installation DVD?

I'm assuming that when prompted by setup to provide drivers, you pointed to the flash key ... :-/

hmmmm sad

2 things --

1) there are some factory-built computers out there (I own one) with some poorly written CD/DVD device drivers. In my own case this does not prevent installation, but post installation the DVD drive stopped working until I was able to discover the bad driver, and delete it (and reinstalling umpteen times).

2) If this is the Vista SP1 DVD you are using, I believe that HP made a mistake when providing drivers for inclusion in the installation media for some devices, so that it attempts to install some poorly rewritten XP drivers (I can't remember the exact details). I heard that this was supposed mainly to affect Compaq machines and not HP brand ones.

Whatever the explanation, something is wrong sad

As a workaround, one *could* suggest either :

a) using the DVD to upgrade your current installation from Premium to Ultimate

b) put the DVD in with Vista up and running, and launch setup (clean installation) from there

But there is a danger in both cases that you may end up with a non-functional DVD drive, if the same issue should manifest -- and with no clear means to fix it sad

------------

Sooooo -- can you please provide us with the exact brand name and model number of your computer, so that we can try and find which chipset it uses and perhaps locate the missing driver for you ?

Can scrambledlife or a mod please edit the actual serial numbers out of the post second above, to prevent any possible fraud ? wink

----------------------------------

Hmmm nice machine otherwise, comes with the Vista 64-bit preloaded smile

(hmmm, you haven't been trying to install a 32-bit operating system to a machine with 5 GB of RAM, have you ?? --- and BTW, the computer will only support 64-bit Windows versions, so it's unsurprising at least that you were unable to install XP)

This is the machine :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107710

http://www.ecost.com/Detail/Desktops/Hewlett-Packard/KT334AAABA/41491395.aspx

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01469325&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3740333&lang=en

Very nice machine :-)

Anyway, the optical drive is SATA, so presumably you are lacking the proper SATA driver during setup.

:download: THIS would appear to be the driver that you probably need, making sure that you install the 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate --- except that it is a very large file, which is NOT a good sign sad

However, the installation package can be unpacked using WinRAR smile

So, get hold of a copy of WinRAR, install it, reboot, and then right-click on the .exe file, and extract the contents to a convenient location (preferably a folder).

Then copy the entire extracted contents into the root of an otherwise empty flash key.

Keep this flash key plugged in, then restart setup booting from the DVD.

Make sure that in your BIOS settings, the computer is rigged to boot from CD/DVD before hard drive, but I'm sure that it does already smile

(I am assuming that the computer will at least boot from the Vista 64-bit DVD lol)

Setup will at one point complain that it can't see the DVD drive that it's booting from. Select the option to add drivers, and you should be able to navigate to *:\****\Source\IDE\WinVista64\sataraid in your flash key, which probably will then contain the files required to install the SATA drivers needed by your Vista.
