Right :-/

Well that's pretty dismal...

Have you tried searching in every folder of the unpacked installation exe ?

Assuming so, then HP do not provide all the necessary drivers for you to install Vista, except for their own factory-made configuration including all the crapware sad

OK

This is the motherboard it uses, apparently :

Motherboard
Manufacturer: Asus
Motherboard Name: M2N78-LA

But this is not helpful, as Google provides no useful information about this motherboard.

I cannot think of a clean solution that wouldn't involve throwing money at it --- ie buying a SATA controller PCI card and using that instead of the onboard SATA to control the optical drive and the hard drive.

This is a choice example of why I don't trust most computer makers, and why it's best to build your own machine or find someone to do it for you (unless you're happy with a factory-designed configuration).

---------

OK one last try, then I give up.

In the computer, booting to the factory-made setup, navigate to

C:\System32\DriverStore

(you may need to change Explorer settings to open this folder)

And copy the *entire contents* of this folder into a blank USB flash key.

---------

Or alternatively (just found something)

Download and run the following freeware utility :

:download: DriverMax

If the publisher is to be believed, it will extract the current drivers and put them into one place for you, so you should then be able to copy them from there into your USB key, and then install Vista.

Cross fingers...

I'm not giving up smile

We don't give up here at PRO, it's not part of our Credo notworthy

As this is a kind and well-meaning gift, then better not make it a poison one LOL

So, forget all that rubbish, and let's start thinking about a PCI controller card for the SATA hard drive and optical drive.

I have no real product recommendations for you, you just have to ensure that the card is Vista x64-friendly. Although ideally, you will want one that you don't need any extra drivers for, other than those already included in the Vista DVD ; so as to have minimal not maximal extra setup issues.

You should then hook up both the hard drive and the optical drive (CD/DVD) to this card instead of to the motherboard - doing so should then let you install Vista without having to worry about the HP crapware issues, nor needing to swallow any more packets of aspirin.

Just go to a proper computer shop, with real computer techies who work there instead of simply salesmen in a suit wink
