US Troop Donations Favor Obama over McCain

August 15, 2008

A new analysis shows a large majority of US troops abroad are donating to presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama over Republican rival John McCain. The Center for Responsive Politics says among US servicemembers, Obama has out-raised McCain by a nearly six-to-one margin. The ratio marks a stark reversal from the last two presidential elections, where President Bush out-raised both Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.

Not surprising considering McCain will likely stay in Iraq and elsewhere much longer than Obama will. Troops want out of war and they don't want pulled back in like many have. Several people have been brought back to active duty after they should have been out. Then there is also some lack of support for the troops on McCains part, where he recently voted against a bill that would make it easier for troops to go back to school after their service by extending more financial aid for service men and women. Given his attitude on spending, I wouldn't be surprised if he voted against the bill that would have compensated those that were pulled back into active duty against their will for their extended service.
