LOL, you should check, because when I was assembling a PC for someone else. I assembled the pc quickly to see if everything is working and installed xp. Then I took the case off and organized everything. It was then that I noticed that the had was burning, I couldn't even keep my fingers on it for a few seconds.

LOL, I would know if they're hot. As a matter of fact, I just popped the panel off and touched them after being on all day..... barely warm.

Nope, and in 20+ years haven't had a need for extra cooling. In fact, I've never had a drive fail that I can remember. (knock on wood again)
How many off the shelf systems have you seen a drive fail on? I've worked on and built them on the side for some time and I've yet to have one fail.

Yes, although overclocking has nothing to do with overstressing my HD. I can monitor HD activity and overclocking causes my more load or stress on my drive than the normal settings.

i have a western digital 80gb hd with 8mb buffer that i use for data storage and it runs ~35c normally (i think its about 100f). my os drive is a seagate with 8mb buffer and 80gb of space that usually runs between 43 and 47c although if i put a small fan to push air into my case (nothing to strong) i can keep the os drive around 37c and the other at about 33c

I have 2 80 Maxtor's running in raid 0. Each one is mounted in a 5.25 bay with a bay cooler. The bay coolers each have two 40 mm fans. Right now the drive temp is 19c. Nice and cool but a bit noisy. I put a home made fan speed controller in and turned them down. Hard drive temp went up to 35c. Took the fan speed controller out and cranked up the volume on my sound blaster. smilenod

I have four 40gig HD RAID-0 and at first, I had the cover off cause those babies would generate quit a bit of heat. I modified my case last weekend and installed two extra fans. One next to the RAID pushing in and one at the top of the case pulling out. I’m looking to get a water cooling system but still leaving the fans for the HD's
