About the TCP window size... what is a good aperature for that? I personally have no clue.

To determin ideal RWIN - TCP Receive Window
Do a number of large pings to determine your latency " - ping - t www.anything.com -l 1472 " (that's a lower case L) ping to something fairly far away and let it run for a couple of minutes to get a good sample of times, then hit ctrl-c and it will give you an average time in ms. Take this value and multiply it by 1.5, take that result and multiply it by your advertised speed in kbps, then divide that result by 8. Take that result and divide it by your MSS (your MTU - 40) take that result and round up to the nex EVEN number. Multiply that by your MSS and that will be your desired RWIN.

Say your latency is 95 x 1.5 x 1000 kbps = 142500
142500/8 = 17812.5
17812.5 / 1460 (MSS) = 12.2 round up to 14
14 x 1460 = 20440 your desired RWIN

This figure is one you just have to play around with, especially if you have an inconsistent connection. If your RWIN is too low you will have slow speed, if it is too large you will get excessive packet loss.

Hope that helps.

I have used TCP optimizer before and it is a good program and very easy to use, however the most important thing is finding a good representation of your latency, and that can only be done through repeated testing to find the true optimum settings - or in the case of connections that really vary, a setting that offers a good balance between performance and packet loss. Plus, it's always nice to know how a program does what it does smilenod
