Yesterday as I was leaving work I needed to grab directions off the internet for where I was trying to go. Usually this would involve me heading to map quest or Yahoo Maps/Directions and fishing around until I found what I wanted. But yesterday, I opted for a new method... Google.
I typed in the name of the business and the city, and submitted my query to immediately get back a list of the nearest locations (and if I gave my current address even more specific directions). In fact, the process was so much faster I couldn't believe it... no more finding addresses or the like. Even better was the easy to read map that gave me the whole trip on a single large image, and the directions off to the side. I have to admit, I was impressed. Enough so to convince me Google Maps was my new map and destination finder.
Then, today I learned Google has incorporated satellite images into Google Maps. The new feature offers the ultimate in bird's eye views for searchers using Google Maps by replacing the standard 2-dimentional maps with images taken by satellite. On the upper right hand side of the Google Maps page is a small text-link that toggles between standard map and satellite image. The satellite images are currently only available for North American addresses but will be introduced for other regions as the year progresses.
As I noted above, Google uses its Map tool in Local search results, helping users plot the fastest route from point A to points B, C, D and E, a feature that translates well from flat-map to satellite map. To get a better sense of the full functionality of Google Maps, request a route from Seattle WA to Miami Beach FL. Note how every time you need to alter course or change highways, Google places a "pin" in the map. Now that Keyhole satellite images are incorporated in their map feature, an image of the intersection or highway interchange is displayed; pretty sweet stuff.
Google never ceases to amaze me on the various directions it goes or the various existing companies it takes head on. Let's be honest and admit that this new service is a full out assault on Yahoo Maps and Mapquest. And if Google keeps its game to par like normal, it could easily become king of the maps and directions search as well.
Another Kudos to Google for a job well mapped...err done.

I think one of the tags are missing for the last image on the left to show.
But the Sattilite Images? That is AWSOME!!

the only complaint i have of the satellite feature is that it doesn't allow you to zoom in real far. it lets you get to about 60% zoom and then you can't go any further. other than that, it's a real nice feature and a lot more detailed than most other satellite maps i've seen.

HOLY CRAP ... i'm looking at images of my old home in VA beach, ... a couple Nimitz class Carriers in Norfolk Naval Base, the landing beaches at Dam Neck ... there's a lot of military bases that should probably have been blacked out ...
EDIT: ... look at somewhere like Virginia beach ... the zoom goes ALL THE WAY IN ... you can even see the cars in the parking lot of the Lynnhaven Mall
