Make no mistake about it, WinHEC 2007 has been all about Windows Server 2008. Their division sponsored the Dodger Stadium party for the press last night, they sponsored the Universal Studios party for all 3,000 attendees tonight, it's what was distributed here this week (see the cover and disc below), their banners and logos are everywhere, etc. etc. Just as the last couple of conventions were all about Vista, this one is all about Windows Server 2008.
At this morning's keynote, Bill Laing laid out the Windows Server roadmap:
Windows Server 2008
Windows Home Server
Windows Server Code Name "Centro" -- “Centro” is the code name for a new core infrastructure solution for midsize businesses with 50-250 PCs.
Windows Server Code Name "Cougar" -- “Cougar,” is the code name for the Windows Small Business Server product that will be based on Windows Server 2008. It is aimed at organizations with 5-50 PCs that outsource many of their IT needs to the channel.
Windows Storage Server "Longhorn"
Windows Server 2008 R2
In addition, Laing revealed that Microsoft is moving to 64-bit OSs exclusively after 2008. They will no longer produce any OS, client (Vista) or server, in 32-bit.
