I really, really liked this film.

Its experimental nature is just successful rather than gimicky, although I must admit that I was a little disappointed at the imperfect portrayal of 21st Century urban warfare ; particularly post- Blood Diamond which did such an amazing job of showing war at its very worst ...

The Cloverfield Monster nevertheless works very well IMO as a personification of War, so these small defects really don't matter in the face of the underlying baroque aesthetics of the film, and its depiction of the absolute Horror of violence and warfare as both witnessed and portrayed by the realistically frail and peaceful protagonists.

The cameraman is a brilliant invention : he's director, cameraman, actor, character, witness, audience, protagonist, antagonist, victim --- all rolled into one smile

---

The Lovecraftian elements are handled with a subtlety that has never been seen before thumbsup
