Hi mikeyt114 Welcome to PROnetworks thumbsup

There is not any PROguide for this problem, it is a Vista/XP known problem.

As you mentioned there is a Reg fix (somewhere) for this, I haven't tried it yet either, yet.

I read about putting ones restore files on another partition (& hiding it) somewhere around here too.

Someone else here may have a tip for you too.

Did you try either of the workarounds shown here? Workaround 2 doesn't require a change to the registry, merely enable bitlocker on the Vista partition. The drawback however is you won't be able to access Vista partition while in XP. You will however be able to access XP partition from Vista.

I thought I saw somewhere on this forum that if you hide the Vista partiton from XP it won't delete your Vista restore points, sorry I don't know how to do it myself, hopefully someone that does will come along.

The easiest way to hide Vista from XP is the registry fix that you are uncomfortable with. The only other way that I know of is to use some form of drive encryption, which I was uncomfortable with. I use the registry fix myself and it works fine.

Do you know how to traverse the registry folders to get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices? If so I can guide you from there.

Once you get to regedit you just click the + signs till you get to Mounted Devices.
+ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> + System, and Mounted Devices should be under there.

Then follow this thread, substituting \DosDevices\D: for \DosDevices\E: because D is the drive letter that XP recognizes as the drive having Vista. Don't be scared. Just create a System Restore point before doing the change.

Here's the link to the thread.
